Interesting Facts About Vitamin D and Our Health…

vitamin d and your healthYesterday I was on a very long road trip.  Its a long drive through the desert area on the way to Albuquerque, which gave me a little time to listen to some talk radio.  Since it was Sunday, of course I was forced to listen to the only station that would come in.  Lucky me, I had just found a 30 minute infomercial about Vitamin D to keep me entertained.

While I found some of it quite interesting (like how Vitamin D can improve your energy levels, make you more alert, and how it is the key to unlocking many other portals for other vitamins to be used by the body), what I enjoyed most, however, was the part about the levels of Vitamin D we should be taking in.

As it turns out, this particular company suggested getting 5000iu per day for optimum health benefits.  They made a convincing argument for why their product is better than others.   After all, they had the facts, the numbers, the studies, and they happen to be a reputable company –  they also offer a free trial and guarantee.  They had me interested, and then they started talking about why their product is safe at the Vitamin D dose they recommend.  That’s when they lost me.  I actually found myself laughing out loud.

Here’s the part I found amusing, and I’m sure you’ll see why… (paraphrasing the first part here)

“Is this product safe?  Of course it is,” Dr. Spokesperson said.  Then, adding with enthusiasm, Dr. Spokesperson proudly proclaimed, “Our product is safe because the dosage we recommend is the same dosage of Vitamin D as spending 5 minutes in the summer sun!”

Seriously? I literally laughed out loud and brought myself to tears.  Wow, free trial or not, they lost me there.  Hey, my grandma used to tell me I needed to be outside for 15 minutes every day and she lived until 92.  Why wouldn’t anyone spend money on their product instead of simply stepping outside?  I’m all for supplements (especially the weight loss ones that I’m not sure if they really work, but work anyway because of the “placebo” effect), but this one seems a little ridiculous, don’t you think?

Conclusion: “Laughter is the best medicine” still applies.  Vitamin D made me feel great yesterday – in more ways than one.  Now off to get some sun!
